ESXi 7.X – Host cannot enter maintenance mode – WTF?

This next one left me scratching my head…

I was trying to put one of my hosts into MM for an NSX upgrade / patching and got the following error:

Host cannot enter maintenance mode because it failed to enter Namespaces maintenance mode on the node.

What is really strange is that I don’t run workload management in my environment because I don’t have the licenses for it!!

Anyway, the only way to get the host to enter maintenance mode was to reboot the vCenter… (wtf??)

I am running vCenter 7.0.1 17005016 and the host was on VMware ESXi 7.0.0 15843807 at the time.

You need to restart the Workload Control Plane (a.k.a. WCP) service on vCenter Server as suggested in the following thread:

Thanks for the link, I had tested this im my own environment back when it occurred and didn’t work but maybe it might for some.
